Wasn't sure if this belonged on this thread or the science thread, but anyone else watching the blood moon tonight? Watching it slowly get covered in shadow and gradually turn red is a great experience.

I couldn't view it outside except for a little bit when it was being covered and looked like a crescent, but other than that I just watched Nasa's live stream of it.

Me and my roommate went outside to watch it but there were too many clouds. It was funny seeing a bunch of people outside disappointed though. We ended up getting in a group and walking around shouting "Fuck you clouds!"

Bill Nye was on the Nightly Show, and was extremely excited to see water was on Mars.

The panelists were ignorant and uninterested in such an important discovery and disrespected Bill's line of work.

Why do people think this is hardly an important discovery, we FOUND WATER ON ANOTHER PLANET. THIS IS HUGE!

What do you expect from people who only care about things that directly impact them

Not like its hard to understand, unless you have some interest in science, water on another planet simply isnt a very interesting discovery. This is the whole problem of why people lost interest in space exploration after the space race, it simply lacks the impact of walking on another world or meeting actual aliens.

So that guy that shot up that college (you know, like what happens every other fucking day in the States! But of course everyone and their mentally unbalanced grandmother should have easy gun access! Thanks, NRA!)

Anyway, I really liked that the sheriff or chief of police or whatever refused to release the shooter's name, because to do so would give him the attention he did all of this for.

and they kept this up for a commendably long time. but as soon as there was a little peep of a name, every media outlet in the country shit itself with joy and threw his name out there, ripped apart his online profiles, and began bothering his family members (who are in shock because their relative murdered so many people and is also now dead? Apparently nobody finds this, i dunno, heartless?).

i'm just... sick of everything. Everything going on in this country right now just pisses me off. Guns for everyone, drugs nobody can afford, dishonest/faked anti-abortion videos to defund an amazing organization that does amazing things and also abortions (if you disagree with the abortions, they do a lot more than that), Trump is top of the polls, everything to do with Kim Davis...

It's funny how most of the issues with this country are primarily due to Republicans cockblocking everything logical and good.

rant over

go back to doing whatever you were doing, discussing mars or whatever
can't wait to see the movie about the most famous long-term Mars resident. What was it called again?

I still haven't heard the shooter's name and I intend to keep it that way. This shit needs to stop. I was honestly kinda scared to walk around campus today because of it.

You talking about the Oregon shooting? Yeah, it's tragic that the media is so eager to report on such depressing and heartbreaking news. It's almost like they want people to feel pain and sorrow.

It's funny, in one of TotalBiscuit's videos (He did one on the Sandy Hook massacre, which the media was eager to blame Vidya for when blaming Video Games for violence was the profitable thing) he made a very thought-provoking argument that the media can be blamed for inspiring mass shooters (their not the only cause, no of course not but it's possible they play a big part) as if you watch any news report on a mass shooting then your basically getting a spoken guide on how to do things such as conceal weaponry and the like, because the media is constantly focused not on the tragedy of people dying and families being torn up, but rather, how that came to be. What weapons the killer used, how he used them, things like that.

Dorkly made a similar comic on That.
In other news Russian police have launched a campaign urging people to take safer selfies after accidents caused by high-risk poses have resulted in about 100 injuries and dozens of deaths this year.

That's exactly what they want.

As the saying goes, feeling pop flyin' doesn't make you want to buy things.

They showed us a video in psychology class a few months back featuring a twin study in which they manipulated each twin's mood. The happier one actually did buy more stuff, while the one who'd had a crap start to her morning actually barely bought anything at all.

Common turns of phrase usually aren't backed up by science, anyway.

But the thing is, people aren't buying anything, their viewing it, which in turn gives them cheddar. Negative News is a lot more likely to spread outrage, especially when people are linking it all around the internet.
