It wasn't, but it could've been on a state level on numerous occasions if not for this decision


By the way, the Supreme Court also ruled in favor of the Affordable Care Act 6-3 against those who challenged it.

You can bet your bottom dollar this isn't the last time it will be challenged

I think the difference resides in the place taken by religion. The most frequent argument against gay people being treated as people is that the Bible says it's a sin.
Sweden is a lot more secular than the US, and a lot more progressive in general anyways.

The decision, in more detail, basically says that marriage between same sex couples is granted under the fourteenth amendment of the constitution, specifically the text that says "nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."
SCOTUS ruled that denying same sex couples the right to marry was denying them their liberty, and therefore same sex marriage is now legal across the US. And since states can't fuck with the constitution, it's staying that way.

Remember though that it was a 5-4 decision, with every conservative judge ruling and offering brutal rebuttals against the decision. It's not as final as some people might like to believe.

The ruling also doesn't prevent gay couples from being legally denied a hotel room, legally fired from their jobs, being legally evicted from their apartments, having their children legally expelled from college, and so on and so forth. Nothing is 'over'.

It's a nice step towards equality, though.

All I see on my Facebook are people celebrating it, and laughing at conservatives. I don't like how they have to laugh at others' opinions in order to make themselves feel happier about something that's good on it's own. It just seems pretentious and mean. It's also sad to see one of my friends be bitter about the whole thing. Someone being upset over the happiness of others and the celebration of this event (no matter how excessively posted about) just makes them look like a grump.

Angel, a large part of enjoying being right is taking pleasure in someone else being wrong. See, this is one of the few issues in the world that only has a yes or no answer. Is being gay right or wrong? There is no moral grey area, no debates or discussions to be had, you're either right or wrong. And since there is no objective reason to homosexuality in any way being wrong or unnatural, anyone opposed to it is being willfully obstinate based entirerly on their own personal disgust and/or religious views, which are both subjective and meaningless to the world at large.

Not surprising that the Attorney general in Texas tells clerks not to give same-sex couples their licenses, saying their religious beliefs have more weight than the Supreme Court's ruling.

I wonder if Texas will try to be its own nation separate from the rest of the US and their laws.

It already was. In fact the Union just up and annexed it, if they didn't I'm pretty sure it would still be sovereign today.

As long as the Free Exercise Clause exists, the separation of church and state will always be skewed.
