With the political media exploding over the misdeeds of the former Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert, it baffles me that despite all this good-on-paper democracy that America is known for, we still have absolutely no say in who the third in line to the presidency is. If there was an inexplicable turn of events that left both Clinton/Bush and Gore/Cheney unable to perform their duties, this man could've been president some time ago.

I sometimes wonder if our votes are actually counted, or if they just throw out numbers. Granted, they're probably smart enough to make sure they add up to the number of registered voters. Also, the popular vote doesn't actually matter. It's the electoral college (when congress votes) that matters. However, I think I'd heard that only once has anyone in congress voted differently than their district, and it was just one vote. Mainly because they want to get reelected in their district.
