The problem with that is that a dog is an effective hunter in the wild, while a zombie isn't. Even the fast ones are outsped by almost everything.

The fact they never get tired is the scary part, not their speed.
We have to stop to eat, drink, and sleep, they don't.

If we assume a virus infected zombie, then they still have to do all that for their bodies to stay functional.

The discussion we are currently having is under the assumption that they do have to eat.

Ehh, not all scenarios are they forced to eat.
Survival guide rules dictate they don't.
28 lightyears later says they do.

If they do, then humanity can just kinda turtle through it.
If not, then helloooooo Fallout.

Wait, are you seriously saying humanity is fucked no matter what in case of a zombie outbreak? If not, I'm sorry for misinterpreting, I had to ask.

Also we were assuming they had to feed because someone brought it up.

I'm talking about a massive outbreak the military can't quite contain.

If they have to eat to survive then humanity can try to bunker down for a little bit until they all starve.

If they don't then we're pretty fucked.
That's what I'm sayin.

I guess a massive outbreak in multiple major cities would cause problems. Luckily for us, there's no realistic scenario where they wouldn't have to feed though :).

Unless, of course, the virus was Fungus based (there are types of Fungus notorious for "zombifying" ants) and could generate food via Photosynthesis

On top of that, if it's fungus based we get to deal with zombies with plants bursting out of their flesh

Good idea Mander, a fungus symbiosis could imply an autosomal zombie. I still think they'd need some feeding though, else the symbiosis is useless. You don't have to fear for plants growing out of them though, plants are in a different kingdom then fungi. Giant mushrooms perhaps, but those are hardly an increased treat. Not that plants are, btw.

The most accepted way of transmittance is by being bitten/wounded right? So the cause has to be directly injected into the bloodstream. One thing that has made me wonder though is: don't most zombie victims get torn to shreds? That would reduce the rate at which the horde grows drastically.

the green flu virus from l4d is a tricky one if you read the comic the passing.

sometimes its airborne, sometimes its not

there are carriers

there are mutant strains
