well basically the decisions i make with him are best described as regrettable and when i talked to him tonight it fell back into the same pattern of regrettable decisions and i dont really want that

You think Bacon hasn't considered that? It's very difficult to change the way you talk to a person when that's the way you've always talked to them. And just ditching the friend is hardly the answer. I'd say just mention the concern to him, and chances are, if he's a bro, he'll understand and help avoid the apparent bad decisions. Although I know that this is very much easier said than done.
