"The only evidence I see is that Joe's a paranoid featherhead." Whitney had a sly smile on her face. "The way he was yelling at people during the day, it's like he thinks we're all out to get him. Wonder why?" The two of them headed back to Whitney's home, where she turned and handed Pierce the crowbar. "Trade for my shovel?" she asked playfully.

Pierce chuckled.

"Hmm.... I suppose so. I was becoming somewhat attached to it."

He hands over Whitney's shovel in exchange for his crowbar.

"Well, we may not have turned up with anything tonight, but at the very least, now we both have an alibi."

He turned and walked to his home, leaving Whitney to ponder his words.

Joe yawned loud and long, and jumped out of his nest of blankets and pillows.
"I have got to get my sleeping habits under control," said Joe as he stretched his wings and legs for a bit. "Ah well, let's see if I can find out who stole that _____ today."
After putting on some clothes, Joe walked out his front door, and while he was taking care not to fall into the pitfall he had cleverly placed directly in front of his door, he noticed that something was off about the ground.
"Someone's been digging here," muttered Joe with a dark expression on his face.

As Joe walked outside, a horrible sight appeared before him at the edge of the river.

Bud was lying there, a knife jammed in his eye, and a Shovel nearby sticking out of the water.

He was undoubtedly dead.
