The last house we rented, the landlady PROMISED REPEATEDLY AND VERY LOUDLY that the place had been treated for bug infestations and that everything was just fine. All while ignoring the obvious piles of stuff the previous tenant left behind (we were out of options and didn't have room to be picky with the place we got).

That night very night, these GIANT FREAKING ROACHES FROM HELL started scurrying out of all the dark corners in my room, physically pushing items all over the places and making the night rather unpleasant. That's how I learned what a palmetto was.

My brother woke up in the middle of the night with a (small) roach in his ear (no damage like in that story). He went back to sleep with duct tape around his head.

No amount of poison was able to kill the things, and we'd frequently run out of bleach when attempting basic chemical warfare. They'd hide inside the walls until we thought they were gone and then come back out in greater numbers.

So we left.

The last house I lived in before leaving Florida had....a bit of a bug problem and occasionally it would be tHOSE FUCKING THINGS
I had several wake me up at night with the crunching sound they make and I even had one surprise me when I was in the shower
