DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT REGRET THIS AND I DO NOT GUARANTEE YOU BEING CREEPED OUT BUT JUST REMEMBER THAT DARK FALZ IS FUELED IN PART BY THE SOULS OF HUMANS OF ALL AGES INCLUDING INFANCY.
*idly cracks his knuckles*
So, my favorite creep topic...
Dark Falz. More specifically, the one from PSO: Episode Iⅈ A being so nightmarish, that the PSO Nightmare Fuel page on tvtropes is at least 50% about Falz.
I'm not joking. When you first play the game, you'll note the progression of areas. Forest is mostly cheerful, caves is kinda mysterious and dank, Mines is mechanical and even shaped, then...
Then you get to Ruins. The place is a
level comprised of Dark Falz's innards. These are also known as
Womb Levels, though I believe the shot above is more a ribcage of...some variety.
As you progress through it,
fighting several deformed enemies,
some of which might even have once been your fellow Hunters, it culminates in the
this hall. After this, you come up on a big Boss Teleporter. All boss teles tell you what the location is. In Forest, the warp to fight Dragon read "Central Dome." De Rol Le's in caves read Underground River or Tunnels, if I remember right; And Vol Opts was the Control Room of Mines.
Dark Falz's warp, however, just says "????". You don't know where you're going, but given the nightmare you just fought through to reach it, it can't be--
Oh hey, maybe there isn't a boss after all. Even the music is pretty!...What's this big monolith?
Oh, shit... What are these things, and why are they coming out of the faces in the ground!?Okay...defeated those...
OH WHAT THE HELL I HAVE TO FIGHT THISI JUST KILLED YOU WHY ARE YOU GETTING BACK UPWhy is half your body a MOUTH!?Naturally, however, Falz on his own isn't that scary; It's the lore that goes with him.
The entire reason you, the player, started your questing through Forest, Caves, Mines, and Ruins is to locate and recover Principal Tyrell's daughter, the ace Hunter, Rico Tyrell, nicknamed Red Ring Rico for the bracelet she always wears. There are message capsules from her scattered throughout the game.
At first, they just give play advice. "Don't attack a Savage Wolf head on, use ranged attacks", "Watch out for Hildebears, they have a powerful punch", and "Try out different Techniques {magic} to find out what an enemy is weak to." Stuff like that.
It gradually shifts to warnings. "Don't follow me..." "It's too late! Go back!" "...I can't...hold on..any longer...."
"...........Help.."
When you meet Falz, you might notice...He has...two sets of arms?
The truth? The smaller set of arms, the ones just above that mouth in his stomach in phases 1 and 2, are not his arms; They are Rico Tyrell's. That's her struggling to escape being devoured by Falz; She was the final one to be consumed that gave rise to his new form.
And the battlefield for Phases 1 and 2 of PSO Falz?
Faces writhing in agony.
Darvants are apparently made from bones of some sort; presumably the
thousands men, women, and children slain when the crew containing the player landed on Ragol and accidentally undid the seals holding him fast. Central Dome, where Dragon resides, was the first settlement on the planet; Oops it's a SMOKING RUIN...Because of Falz.
Even moreso,
The music. The music itself, and the title to boot. Pray, for IDOLA the Distorted, followed by..
Cry, for IDOLA the Holy. And this guy doesn't even compete with older incarnations, let me tell you. He's one of the least scary, really; Only one less intimidating is
This guy.Who, granted, is scarier on paper anyway given his intended design. DS limitations, I suppose.
