Yup, that event was also responsible for informing people about how important it is to not over hydrate, and that water poisoning is just as serious as alcohol poisoning.

Which is usually pretty hard to do, unless you're forcing yourself/being forced to do it. Your body can handle an impressive amount and get rid of it quickly if it feels like you have too much.

However, because she kept drinking and wasn't allowed to relieve herself, it all built up within her, and thinned her blood, thus causing death. Really terrible way to go out though (not because of the pain, which would be minimal, but because she passed away at the prime of her life in a silly contest).

Also, I still love the DHMO scare. When I was still thinking about becoming a chem teacher, I had an idea of scaring my students with a beaker full of DHMO that I'd stick my hand in.

Might still do that with my Bio kids... :P

While we're at it, never drink demineralised (pure) water. Osmosis will cause you to die a very painful death.

Come on Syobon, Osmosis Jones isn't a bad guy.

Yup, found that out a few years ago, since I'm very particular about the taste of my water. I thought it was just stupid bullshit "health" propaganda that made water bottling companies put dissolved minerals and electrolytes in water, but they do that to keep you from killing yourself.

Thank god for Smart Water though, can't stand most other bottled/tap water, but I love me some steam distilled water.

Care to elaborate on that? Sounds interesting.

Osmosis can take all the water away from your blood cells or fill them with water until they blow up.

Basically, the water is too pure to process. When it goes through your body, it'll make your cells swell, and eventually burst.

Made even worse if it's the only thing you have in your stomach.

Reddit AmA from someone working at CERN. For those unfamiliar, it's like an interview where anyone can ask questions. Couple of interesting things in there.
