Honestly, I very strongly disagreed with Def's post (I mean, really, are we supposed to just completely ignore others and focus only on ourselves like a bunch of self-centered jerks? Since when is trying to entertain others such a horrible thing), but, yeah, you are really over-dramatizing.
The point that I was trying to make was that you should do something because you want to do it for others, not because others want you to do it for themselves.
If you do something because you enjoy doing it, and others subsequently enjoy your actions, then great. But if you do something that you yourself derive no joy from simply to please others, then that's pretty pathetic. Doing selfless acts like charity make you feel good about yourself. Being liked makes you feel good about yourself. Entertaining makes you feel good about yourself. But if you are doing something simply because others will it, then you're really doing it not of your own will. In other words, you shouldn't do something purely to please or impress other people. You should do it because you want to. (Mind you, I'm not saying don't do nice things for other people, because doing nice things also makes you feel good about yourself.) Otherwise, if you don't desire to do something of your own volition, that makes you essentially a puppet, an extension of other people's will. You should do something for other people because you want to do it.
What I'm trying to explain is complicated, and I'm sure that this is sounding better in my head than typed out. The gist of what I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't hide behind others for your reasoning, because nobody truly forces you to do anything. In the end, you, and you alone, make the decision. You can shoot somebody who has a gun pointed at you, but ultimately you pull the trigger. They don't force you do anything.
I know that I'm probably reading too much into this, and I apologize for the SRS TIME. I wanted to make a point, but I guess all I did was blow this whole thing out of proportion. I know that I'm just fanning the flames of the fire at this point, but my last post seemed to be completely misunderstood, and I just wanted to clarify it.
