I deleted a group in our "User defined groups" titled "Moderators", because every few months I go through and get rid of color-changing gimmicks that aren't in use any more. That might have deleted the line for moderators under the subforums, but when I recreated the group there is no option to add lines underneath the subforums displaying moderators. All I can do is add a link in the legend that displays the group upon clicking it. It's possible the User created group "Moderators" was linked to something moderators can't access, which is why I can't see/fix it, but other than that I do not know.

This post would be less about the forum and more about the people in it, but where else could I go to complain about the forum's community?

In short, it's really one of the worst I've ever encountered.

I put a post in the Introduction thread well over a month ago, and it was summarily ignored by every single person who went to that thread. The thread-goers were more content to make in-jokes among themselves, whilst paying no attention to the newbies - well, until someone else came in. Then they were very motivated to welcome them to this wonderful forum.

I tried to have some intellectual discussion about books in the books thread, and the one person who responded hated the series that I tried to talk about and made me feel like an booty for bringing it up.

I posted an edit in an comic's thread not long after. Response was underwhelming, and the edit was so bad in retrospect that very thought of me making it makes me want to go back in time and shoot the me who thought it was a good idea in the head, because I looked even more like an booty by showing it off.

The only place in this forum where I haven't felt excluded or judged is in the Fire Emblem thread, and I'm in a whole other forum for FE discussion and whatnot.

To reiterate, the community feels closed and unwelcoming to me; I never see anywhere where I can come in and post without potentially being ostracized for it. This'll probably happen in this thread, too, because I'm just whining about how everyone here hates me and not criticizing the forum in any meaningful way. Boo-hoo, et cetera.

Given that this is only based on my observation of a relatively small amount of people, chances are good that I got the short end of the proverbial stick coming into this forum, and most other people are not like the people I've encountered. But, I wanted to express that my experience of the forum so far has bodaciously been unwelcoming. A good community makes a great forum, after all.

But, I suppose there's nothing to be done about that. You can't make a rule forcing forum-goers to include others, making them welcome people to the forum; nobody would like that. No, each member of the community makes their own choice on how to respond (or not respond) to others, and it seems I got left with the worst possible bunch.

Post-rant comment: Community aside, this forum looks like a very nice place to discuss the comics and video games and other stuff. I hope to be more involved in it. And if I've broken the rules enough with this post to warrant a ban or similar request to leave, well, I'm sorry. I guess I wasn't a good fit for this forum.

No rules broken man, and you're right, that's what this topic is for.

However, as you said, it's perhaps unrealistic to enact some kind of forced inclusiveness. There isn't exactly a clear cut solution for a problem like that. I'm sorry if you've felt unwelcome or closed out, I don't think anybody has that intention here. If anybody has been breaking any of the rules, or been outright abusive, you can let a moderator know and they'll deal with it, but we can't really make friends for you. I would of course refer people to global Rule #1 from the rules thread:

Quote:
1.) Don't be rude. This is an overhead rule. This includes harassing someone, insulting someone, and continuously posting something despite protest from other members. You will be reprimanded, your post(s) may be deleted, and you will receive your first ban if the offense is severe enough.

I can't speak for everyone else, but this is bodaciously the first time I've seen you post, man. People here tend to only visit threads that interest them, and I rarely visit the Books thread and don't really care for comic edits since they've been largely taken over by Entei and Nowi edits lately. As for the Introduction thread, it looks like from the date you joined I was getting ready for finals and wasn't on the forum a whole lot. I'm fairly certain no one here hates newbies, but I do understand the feeling. I had to deal with people not really noticing me(or at least that's how it felt) when I was new. My advice is that if you're interested, stick around for a while longer. More than likely, you'll find some common ground with someone.

You have like 16 posts total, 15 if you don't count this post here.

Gonna have to post harder to level up your social skill.

I'm glad to see that you're sympathetic. I know I shouldn't get on my soapbox about how people don't seem to like me, et cetera, and that you can't make friends for me, as you said. However, getting it off my chest makes me feel better enough to go out into other threads again, even if this should have been a private matter, brought up and resolved a month ago.

It's all in the past now, though, so why worry?

Yeah, I've only had, what, 16 posts, including this one? No surprise that you haven't noticed; I went to lurking in around the FE thread after about a week. I've been meaning to post in more threads, but I couldn't shake the fear of having a repeat of my first few threads.

Yes, yes, I know. Not gonna delve into my personal fears and all, but that's a bit harder than it sounds for a guy like me. That's not your concern, though; this isn't a therapy thread, after all. (And I shouldn't make it one.)

Thanks for your support, guys. I really needed some encouraging words to get me back into the forum.

The secret to making friends on this forum is to make a ridiculous shipping wall of forum members, then promise to make a second one and never get around to it.

The first post I made on AZ was in a comic thread making a hipster glasses information core joke that didn't really go over well. It kinda discouraged me from posting again until I made a wonder twins comic edit about a month later, which, while getting some response, still seemed to be largely ignored.

At the time, I was already in another community, one that I was kinda close to even though it was terribly restrictive and kinda stunted my view a bit of what other decent forums were like. I told myself that I wasn't here for the community, which seemed like a group of circlejerkers, I was here for the comic and the edits.

But, I started venturing out of Le Comic into the video game section, namely the Pokemon group, and found a bit of a place to post. I could share some knowledge, I got to know some members, and I gradually wanted to get to know people a bit more and understand the forum. I probably butted heads with a few people more than I should have, I sometimes felt like I fucked up royally in discussions when I was really just overinflating the impact I'd actually have, and sometimes I felt really shitty about some of the things I've said, regardless of whether there was any fallout over it. However, as time went on, I made fewer mistakes, I got to know people, and some of the people I thought were kinda icy or dicks ended up being a lot more reasonable than I gave them credit.

I don't even go to the old community anymore besides to cringe at the fact that some of my former friends there are either being treated badly by the community they can't seem to break free from, or are causing the problems in said community to begin with by being entitled prats. AZ takes a bit of getting used to, but it's a pretty nice community if you can get past the brashness, and it's always looking to kinda fix up the problems it has. When I joined, there was a lot of controversy over certain issues and some kinda unpleasant discussion happening, none of which would happen currently without a serious mod intervention occurring.

Anyways, I hope you'll find AZ to be a nice place if you'll give it a chance. AZ isn't really the type of place to gush over you, and the introduction thread tends to be kinda dead or ignored by many members due to the rarity of new members joining and actually using it, but you should also not take AZ's silence towards you as condemnation. We're all socially awkward people, and sometimes the words just don't come to us on how to respond. Do we be our typical jokey selves, or is that going to come across as intense and unnerving to them? Generally, AZ will try to make it clear to you, in a nice way, if you crossed a line, either with a (hopefully) friendly post, or a mod dropping by on behalf of members to clear stuff up.

Since I probably didn't do so before, welcome to AZ. Feel free to read the rules posted at the top of every subforum, post wherever you like, and contact a mod if you have any problems. I hope you'll enjoy however much time you spend here.

And remember, you're here forever.
