Can anyone provide another source that doesn't think mitochondria are cells? Regardless, very interesting.

If this is true, it will eventually be widely available whether the big companies cooperate or not. In fact, this might be the ideal opportunity to refresh the market, when smaller companies can use this to grow bigger.

The link to the original research is proving to be more interesting, reading through it now.

Edit: Ok, this seems pretty sound. They haven't tested it on human cancer cells yet though, unlike the first article says.

Berlusconi basically lost this year's administrative elections.

Good news.

About the current events, I hope DSK (Dominique Strauss-Kahn) didn't try to rape that woman. He's a cool guy with lots of useful skills, and I wouldn't have minded having him as a president (almost everything is better than the current dwarf).
If he did try to rape her though - I hope he spends a good amount of time in prison. I just find it hard to believe that he'd screw everything when it's all going good for him.

So close.

Bacteria on cucumbers imported from Spain cause nine deaths of mostly(all?) elderly people in Germany.

Cucumber sales in Belgium crash.

This is why we can't have nice things.

It's just one of these hyped sicknesses that will be completely forgotten in a few months even though it is still around. When reading about this, always think about how many people die of the common flu every year and compare it with the number of people being infected/dieing from those things.

Key word there, elderly. The most people who die of any kind of bacteria are children and elderly, because their immune systems are weak.

A group of eco-activists has destroyed a field with genetically modified potatoes that were purely intended for experimental purposes, planted by a researchers from the University of Gent. Among the eco-activist were professors of the Universities of Gent and Leuven. The experiment is worthless, a million dollar project down the drain. The field was guarded by 50 policemen, but the group of at least 200 activists managed to break through with force.

The University of Gent has announced that it will take juridical action against the activists and has fired any employees that were involved in the action. The University of Leuven will take measures against her employees involved, but it's unclear as of yet of what those actions will consist. Police had arrested several activist, but they were released.

Some context: using genetically enhanced plants for agricultural means is still illegal in the European Union, while it has been legal in the USA and most of the world for a long time now. 96% of soy beans worldwide are estimated to be genetically engineered.

This is a sad day for science and democracy in Belgium, and I'm mad as hell.
