I think it's that the surface is always in motion, releasing heat into the slower 'atmosphere'.

fun fact: in the lion king, scar is mufasas younger brother, but scars mane was darker. this only happens to older lions, so technically, scar and mufasa should have had their colours swapped.

It's because the helium in the corona is fully ionized, which keeps it from radiating heat. The gas in the corona just keeps getting hotter and hotter until it reaches seven-digits degrees in Kelvin.
