Friday, May 14th. The last mission for Space Shuttle Atlantis. I spent the last few nights watching live feeds, the launch several times over (full thing, suit up, briefing, final check, and launch), and then I was hit with a strange feeling. There's never going to be anyone in that shuttle again. There's only two more shuttle missions before they're retired. That wouldn't be so bad if the Constellation program was still going but it was killed by the budget bastards in Washington. There is no manned missions by the United States planned after this. They'll hitch rides on the Russian Soyuz until the ISS is retired in the 2020's or private sector once they get low orbital vehicles capable of such feats.

I knew this was coming, but when I was watching it I couldn't help but cry. The end of an age where the United States could go to space under their own power. They went to the moon, they planned to go back in the next ten years, to MARS in the next thirty. Now it's gone.

Nah, the Constellation Project was picked up by a private contractor, Lockheed Martin. It'll be launched (manned) in 2015.

Something tells me that the US won't keep their space program dead forever and ever.

The US isn't getting rid of their space programs, they're diverting it to their REAL space program:
