and on the note of wings, not absurdly large, but on scale with other creatures of our size (see pterodactyl)

Dude got another idea. Could we replicate dinosaurs if we wanted to?

Just for the love of God do not mess with fucking raptors.

I feel like you're making fun of me.

Squids don't use jet propulsion in the sense that they have ACTUAL JETS on their body. It's a biological function, completely unrelated to how a fucking rocket would perform.

And it's not just a sense of proportion. Pterodactyls flew because they had hollow bones, very tiny legs, and a ridiculous amount of muscles to create lift and thrust. Humans are not designed to be light, we're designed for walking. Slow, lazy, plodding.

Um. What if we made a human with hollow bones and insane amounts of muscles?

Okay picturing that, that would be kinda fucking horrifying.

Yeah, we kind of need our bones to anchor those muscles, and if we just make them hollow willy-nilly, there's a good chance that person will not survive. Birds have the advantage of MILLIONS of years of evolution perfecting their structure.

Pterodactyl is optimised for flight, meaning hollow bones (I think), no excess weight (arms, legs) and a fortified chest bone for the wing muscles to attach to.

If you make all those adaptations to a human, it isn't a human any more. You could probably make a very intelligent creature that can fly perhaps, but I don't think we're technologically advanced enough to do that yet.

Furthermore, all flying vertebrates use the bones that form our arms to form their wings, and it's very hard to sprout and extra set of limbs in a way that doesn't endanger skeletal integrity. I don't think there are any non-aquatic vertebrates with more than 4 limbs.

Ninja'd again.

As for your other question, if we have the complete genome of an animal, we're technically capable of resurrecting it.

However bear in mind with this and the previous discussion, there isn't a solid reason to do any of this, other than for research and the research possibilities aren't that interesting versus the cost, it would mostly just allow us to enhance our genetical engineering techniques.

Keep getting ninja'd.

Normally I don't give a shit about anything science, but daisies this stuff is interesting.

Maybe like, an animal that isn't human at all?

....Could we make a nurgle?

We could make a Jaltican.

We could make something that looks like Nurgle (there are some diseases that look like him) but it wouldn't live very long. And there are strange animals enough already, I'll try to find you some links.

If you were to make an original critter where would the dna come from? would you just use a massive pool of dna or can you actually code genes from scratch?

First of all, the genetic difference between all life on the planet, from bacteria to human beings, is something like 6%.

94% of all the DNA on this planet is identical. So if you're going to start from scratch, it won't actually be from "scratch."

@Blitz, We could build DNA from scratch but we wouldn't be able to predict what the outcome would be with current technology.

There's also the problem that you need to find a suitable "mother cell" to inject the DNA in to.
