I like the vibrant colors! I think it goes with with that background.

I'm trying to get into Blender so I have direct references for angles and posing. If anyone's got any tips for someone who just downloaded it, it would be appreciated.

I also just downloaded sculptris to start off.

I started by fiddling with cubes and found that the Extrude and Subdivide tools are my best friends. So I don't have any real advice you can't get out of a tutorial googlin'. Though, I can try to come up with a few things when I get a turn on the computer and not have to type walls of text on a smart phone.

Do you have any subject of curiosity in mind?

Also, I have never heard of Sculptris before.

Scuptris is a pretty easy to use program for making models.
I have tried looking at some tutorials, but there is a discouraging amount of stuff to learn. Just modeling in general would be nice since I usually end up making a mess instead of anything with a semblance of form. Perhaps posing too.

Well, personally, I start by making a very low-poly object, usually with a cube or plane. Then I use Subdivisions and smoothing to give the mesh more shape as I work; it's kind'a like gradually molding clay.

Assuming you're using the newest version, upon opening it, you get a basic scene built with a cube, a camera and a light source. Only the cube is important when you're learning, so don't worry about the camera or the light.

On the left of the main viewport are context-sensitive tools that you can use for things. It changes depending on which editing mode you are using, defaulting to Object Mode. You can use the various tools in Object Mode to join objects, scale them, transform (move) and rotate. I recommend playing around with the functions a bit after Right-Clicking (selecting) the cube in the center of the screen.

Press Tab to switch to Edit mode and back. In edit mode, when you select a mesh object, it makes its wireframe visible, allowing you to select vertexes, edges and faces, depending on the highlighted icon at the bottom of the viewport. By holding Right-Click, you can drag selected objects around in relation to the camera, or press G. If dragging an object with G, press X, Y or Z to constrain it to an axis.
When selecting with Right-Click, you can add more objects to your selection by holding Shift. This is an important one to remember to make things much quicker.
Press E to extrude vertexes/edges/faces from the object to create new Geometry.

When in Object Mode, you can use the Create tab on the left side of the screen to create new mesh objects and some other things.

So, that's the basic How-To-Navigate stuff since I don't know how much you already know!

Thank you, I'll keep this all in mind! I've heard of some of this stuff from a tutorial, but I wasn't able to make sense of it, but I think that clears it up a bit.

Ahhh. Goody. So I was saying something helpful!

Also, don't try to worry about getting into animation and posing just yet. Start with working on the shape of things first. Play with rigging objects for animation after you get an idea of how the workflow works.

And try to limit how many triangles you use in a mesh. Keep everything built from quads (squares) while you model so that you can more easily keep track of which line loops around which section of your mesh. Not only does it keep the mesh looking clean, but it eventually makes it easier to assign bone weights when you get ready to try to affix a mesh to a skeleton.

Whoops, big.

A color theory rough. Plum tree and Cyclamen flowers. Brick stuff in BG.
The back branch is a bit too faded.
Anyone got any color advice?

I think the colours you've got are pretty interesting. If you're prepared to continue refining the forms I think you'll have a really sweet illustration there. That gold you're using as highlight, maybe put some scattered spots of it in the PANK leaves of the tree, as if some of the leaves are angled just right to catch and reflect the light.

Look, it has to be said, the G1 toys were basically just plastic garbage.
