Most people who get married for the hell of it don't last 10-15 years...

I wonder what is the length of an average marriage that ends in divorce?

I was just taking a stab in the dark and saying 10-15 years, but it sounded about right. I know someone who got married just because she wanted a husband, so she married the first guy who was interested in her, and she's getting divorced around the 14th year.

A lot of people try to make a bad marriage work because they feel a social stigma about getting divorced (shame they don't feel that same stigma about getting married on a whim), and it's not for around quite a few years before they give up.

In other words: "humans are weird lol"

I'd love it if gay marriage was made legal in America, obviously, but I can't really say that the government really has any role in the matter. The Church is it's own little thing, they can make their own rules about their own ceremonies, I guess. I believe that they define marriage as a man and a woman, and no one else can really tell them that they're wrong even if it is excluding people.

Honestly? The government has every role in the matter. I can't find a USA statistic, but in Canada, 58.9% of people in 2001 were married by a government official, not a church body. The government obviously has a big role in marriages.

The way I see it, the law should be something roughly like this:

1. Marriage should between any two consenting adults.
2. Religious Institutions can put any limitations on this they desire, and cannot be forced to marry people that they do not feel should be married.
3. Magistrates and Justices of the Peace must marry anyone who comes before them who qualifies to be married under the law.

Just like that.

At least it's still legal/recognized in some states. Becomes legal in Vermont on September 1st.

Only in some states, and it doesn't apply past state borders. And it's still nowhere near as comprehensive as marriage, legal etc-wise.

Yeah that's true... I'm all disillusioned now. D:

Another thing that upsets me is when people think that trans or gender identity confused people are messed up. This one kid in my school gets crap talked about him behind his back all the time. And for what? Being who he wants to be? What a waste of energy to hurt someone like that. I don't see how it supposedly makes them so different from everyone else, and I certainly don't understand why people have to talk about "how wrong it is" and that "they're just doing it for attention."

You know what I think would make everyone pop flyin'? Let homosexuals get married, but call it something other than marriage, and make that be the ONLY difference. That way, people stop whining about how marriage should be only for a man and a woman and how that's the reason homosexuals shouldn't get married.

Except homophobes, they'd probably be unhappy no matter what.

Of course, it's probably not actually that simple. These kind of things never are...

I think that might be getting into the whole "seperate but equal" thing again. Maybe if they had a ceremony that was all inclusive and still not called marriage? It's a shame the church refuses to change anything.

You shouldn't have to change anything. If two people of the same sex want to get married, than let them. It wouldn't be the end of the world.

Yes, thank you. Calling it something different is just leaving room for inequality.

Exactly.

Though my point is that the law should be crafted in such a way that religious institutions cannot be forced to marry people they don't want to.

Of course, government isn't a religious institution, so it doesn't matter if churches refuse to marry people, because same sex couples can still get married by the Justice of the Peace.

Bam, everyone is pop flyin'.

I don't think "religious institutions" force anybody to marry. Families do. It's because of customs that have been passed down for ages. Churches just say the shit, they don't force anything.

You misread me.

I meant that churches should not be required by law to marry same sex couples, and should not be punished for refusing to marry same sex couples.

That being said, the government SHOULD be required by law to marry same sex couples.

AKA, it's a separation of church and state sorta thing.
