that's why you just make your own shit. much cheaper, much more impressive.

if you currently can't sew, buy some cheap material from the dollar bin and start practicing. really helps if you have a family member who sews and can help you out. i'm grateful for my mom for teaching me the basics as a kid. but yeah go buy a cheap pattern for like a blanket or something and get the feel of it. even if you gotta handsew it coz you don't own a machine and/or don't want to invest the cheddar in one. but for americans at least there's machines at walmart for like $80 that are excellent starter machines. can't do a whole lot more than sew in a straight line but really that's all you need haha.

Yeah. If I ever got serious about making a costume, I would go down to Goodwill and check out their selection.
They definitely have a pretty random selection of clothing, and so it might be perfectly what you need.

A lot of my cosplays were things that were pieced together. I did a Bubble Man costume and I went to ebay for a lot of it. I bought a costume from Milanoo and from what I've seen about that website, I'm the only person to get what was pictured on the page.

But back to the main point, ebay and thrift stores are going to be your best friends.

At last year's A-kon I went as Professor Layton. Got the suitcoat and orange sweater thing at Goodwill (something like $8 for both). Pants and shoes were already owned.

All I made was the hat. ~$2 poster board, ~$10 can of black spray paint.

So an entire cosplay for ~$20.

So yeah, thrift stores are great. Especially if it's a simple cosplay (like Layton, heh) or something set in modern times or that uses a lot of modern clothes. Even if you're just getting things as a base to alter/add to, it's a lot better than making it from scratch.
