A slogan that's funny, interesting, bizarre or even borderline offensive is more likely to be remembered than the usual "fight breast cancer" or the like. And that usually means more donations.

It's because of the way it makes cancer patients feel, i.e. "you're only worth saving because you're attached to tits and that's all I value about women. Cancer is bad because it means you're no longer sexy or worth my care, not because you might die." Plus, many women with breast cancer have to have their breasts REMOVED to save their lives-- the whole "save the tits" thing makes victims feel like their breasts are more important than their lives in the eyes of others when it comes to having to cut them off just for a chance at living. Women who have to go through that already often feel worthless, ugly and unfeminine because of the loss of their breasts. Our society places enormous strain on breast size, presentation and proportion re: being considered attractive. Having a pretty face and a flat chest makes people pity you-- a huge rack and everything else being "so-so" is regarded as favorable by many, by comparison. Are the people who go out of their way to make women know their feelings are that way assholes? Sure they are-- but it doesn't change our society's sometimes unspoken but VERY extant standards of conventional beauty.

It's kind of like if cheddar was being given to planned parenthood by a huge movement whose argument was "save the bachelors" or "keep sluts childless" or something. Is it more cheddar for a cause? Sure. Does it make the people they're "helping" feel undervalued and shamed? Absolutely.

I know it's a joke and I'm not stating my own opinion necessarily-- just pointing out that it's very demeaning when people get really into the "lol lighten up stop being so offended pfft tits are great!" thing.

Without the shirts and wristbands breast cancer would just be one of the other hundreds of deadly diseases that doesn't have any media and awareness, or cheddar. So people should just stop whining about getting shittons of cheddar donated towards a cure.

That's really mean and insensitive and reduces people who are sad and feel objectified over something already horrible and life-threatening to pointless "whiners." If I start a huge movement called "chix with dix" or "all aboard the tranny train" in support of trans* movements, would I also get to tell everyone who's upset to shut up and stop whining because cheddar?

There are MANY respectful movements to do with breast cancer, so no, the "omg save the tiddies" movement isn't the capstone of the breast cancer movement and isn't indispensable. What about Susan G. Komen and the race for the cure and the many other movements that support it that don't emphasize that breast cancer is bad only because it threatens conventional attractiveness? :\

Either way I think if this keeps going we should move it to Taboo probably.

It's called having a sense of humour, the people making these slogans are just looking to support a cause in a catchy way and there's absolutely no need to extrapolate all that stuff to extremes.

I agree with Wry, there's no way you can say with a straight face that "they should just stop whining". It's insensitive.

Syobon, so people should just shut up and feel miserable if they don't laugh at losing their breasts because of cancer since it's ~their own fault~ for not feeling like it's anything to make fun of? Come on now.

Its not fair for you to assume he's being malicious when he's clearly not.

Its a joke to support a good cause. You can say its awful and terrible and demeaning or whatever if you want, but the intent is to help with the aid of humour, not to hurt. There's no need to take such a simple, little thing to such extremes.

@Le Great Handsome Oppressor, They're not making fun of breast amputation any more than a slogan saying "save the whales" is making fun of slaughtered whales.

The intent is good, and I'm not saying they should stop altogether, either.

Some people are hurt by that and you can't disregard them, that's the fact of the matter. There are better ways to help, and you can't blame getting upset by this on the people getting upset. It's still not exactly mature, and potentially upsetting.

Syo, that's not a good analogy at all. It would be a good one of the slogan was, "help women against cancer". Not, "save tiddies". I'm not blaming them from trying to help, but disregarding people that find it hurtful is silly and insensitive.

The thing is, some people are always going to find some reason to be upset with something. There is no single solution that pleases everyone. If you don't like those types of slogans, don't use them. I find it contra-productive to the primary cause to get upset at people who are just trying to help in their own way.

They didn't decide to be upset at this slogan, and they're not saying so because they want people to stop donating for research against breast cancer, either
I'm not saying people that use these slogans should be ashamed of themselves. People should just keep it in mind that some people find it upsetting. That's all.

Basically this.

Besides, the vast majority of people who have to go through a mastectomy are breast cancer patients.

Telling them to shut up and not be offended because you're getting them cheddar for their disease doesn't make much sense.

You should not speak for people or say their objections aren't valid just because "there's always going to be a complaint".

There's probably better ways to go about raising funds without being boringly practical ("fight breast cancer!") or catering to "tiddies are awesome". Why not something like "Let's kick breast cancer's booty" or something of that sort?

I'd be all for the "kick breast cancer's booty" slogan.
