I understand feeling depressed and not wanting to do anything, but you really shouldn't skip college like that.

Some bad stuff went down, I am feeling really vulnerable and if anyone feels like listening to me talk about it, feel free to contact me over steam. Could use a shoulder to cry on.

I just don't know what it takes to get a job in my field. Maybe i should just work at starbucks for the rest of my life. Try to save up for grad school or some shit since apparently my bachelor's isn't worth shit.

Ugh i really just need to talk with my old career counselor but it might be a while before i can set up an appointment.

Yeeeeah. I'll probably have to get certifications and internships to make me stand out. There's just a ton to learn.

The switch from high school to college is hitting me pretty hard. I've failed all three of my engineering exams so far (so has most of the class, but they're at least in the 40-60 range, while I'm at the 15-30). It's mostly due to not studying enough/not knowing what to study, which I never had to do in high school.

As a result of this, I'm switching into the pre-engineering class and it makes me feel kinda incompetent because none of my friends are. I could probably improve in my engineering class if I really put forth the effort, but as it stands now, even if I got perfect scores on everything from here on out, I'd just barely make a B in the class. I'd rather just switch into something a little more my pace and then do better when I take the actual engineering class again.

It just makes me feel so daisies useless. I studied just as much as my roommate and he got a 69 on the last exam, where I got a 24.

A lot of universities have a "how to study/use a university library" course for their freshman. You could probably look into that, if you have the time.

We have something similar to that here called REACH (can't remember what it stands for), I just haven't gone to it yet. Either way, I feel like I'll do a lot better in the long run by taking the easy class now and learning to study through it, than by keeping the harder class. I'm not too worried about it, just kinda offput that I did so much worse than everyone else even though I scored really high on standardized tests in high school. I guess I was just cocky.

Sometimes the jump from high school to college is a bit too far. I skipped the first year of college because of grades in high school, and it ended up being the worst thing I could have possibly done to my college career. So many second year classes built so much on the idea that you not only learned the basics at their college their specific way, but also that you've been a member of the college for a year and know all the ins and outs of the facilities and can be expected to use them just as well as your peers.

This meant not being told where to check out equipment in my chemistry labs, or that I needed to purchase my own set before the first lab because hey, you already took first year lab, so you just bring those back from last year!

Do not feel bad for going back to the basics again in college. It's better to do that than to struggle uphill getting mediocre grades or having to eventually be forced back down to the bottom because you can't keep climbing. Besides, it gives you a chance to refresh, you likely know most of the material so the class can be easy, and it can help your GPA.

Never be in a hurry to finish college on some deadline. Shit's going to happen, there's going to be complications. Do not fixate on a 3-5 year plan, since more often than not that'll get fucked up somehow (scheduling usually).

Thanks, I needed to hear that. And I can't imagine what starting as a 2nd year would be like. 1st year is challenging enough as it is.

One thing that makes me pop flyin' is that I didn't take any college classes in high school and most of my friends did, yet most of their credits weren't accepted, so they're not really ahead of me and I get to brag about it.

Don't worry too much about being "ahead" or "behind" - really don't bother comparing yourself with others too much.

I pressured myself into taking too many classes every semester because every time I changed my major or dropped something I thought "oh well I don't want to look like I'm slacking, I want to be the overachiever" and then I'd burn myself out. i could've made things a lot easier on myself by focusing on what I wanted to do and not what I felt like I was expected to do.

But yeah take your time, try different classes, learn good study skills and definitely talk to your professors if you need any help with assignments. (it also helps to build relationships with them in case you need their advice/networking connections for when you're looking for jobs later on)

High school and college are way, way different. In high school it seems like a lot of people are invested in your success and expect/want you to make straight A's. In college, it's more about what you want to accomplish and learn, and most professors couldn't give two shits about what grades you make, unless you're trying to get in some specific program or class with a prerequisite. Ultimately your success is determined by you, not the prof.

Thanks, I'll keep all of that in mind. I doubt I'll ever take more than 15 hours in one semester unless I need to. And I switched into the pre engineering class today. Honestly, I'm glad I did it. It'll give me a better background for when I move on to the harder stuff, and it's only 2 days a week instead of 5 so I now have more time to study and stuff. I'm also doing well in the rest of my classes so far. My Chemistry professor is terrible (my class is like 2-3 whole units behind the other Chemistry classes), but I'm still managing to make it by so far by learning on my own/asking friends for help.

Feeling a whole lot less stressed today, so I think I made the right choice by switching classes. I also checked with my adviser, and she said that as long as I pass my classes, I won't really be behind at all. I'll just have to take an extra math class in place of a Gen Ed class somewhere down the line.
