Melanin offers protection against sunburn, but only to a point, and there's still the radiation to deal with. Without getting sunburned, people aren't as cautious or mindful of the sun's damage so it can actually be even worse than the person who knows he'll get an all-body blush if he stays out too long.

One summer many years ago I got sunburnt on my shoulders so bad the entirety of them was turning purple and blistering to the point that when someone brushed against my shoulder, a whole bunch kinda burst and moistened my shirt.

That's nasty, man. I never got sunburned to the point of blisters. I usually just tan, sometimes I go lobster, though.

Oh, one more fun thing I found out recently about sunburns. It's a bit misleading to call them that, because their real damage is direct DNA damage. Meaning it's not just your skin getting fried, but right down to the DNA level too.

And research diving today has informed me that sunscreen is very bad, since it only blocks sunburns and radiation when it's not absorbed into the skin. Once it is, it empowers that DNA damage which multiplies the chances of malignant melanoma, otherwise known as the skin cancer with a high mortality rate. Which only cements my intention to stay away from the evil daystar at all times.

And no one will laugh at me again for not leaving my mom's basement!
