So my mom hopes to put our guinea pig down herself due to the vet almost never showing up.

A good thing considering his eye had turned into something from a Resident Evil game. Like the G-virus.

So why do guinea pigs even exist? They can't actually have survived in the wild, I don't know of any other animal that dies of bad health in good living conditions after only a few years

They probably don't have that long of a lifespan in the wild anyway.

Maybe they're better suited to whatever environment in South America they lived in than a cage, albeit a nice one. Maybe through breeding they've gotten frailer but more tame or something. A lot of factors might go into that...

Now you've got the biologist in me wondering

^ this. Wild ones live even shorter lives normally. Same for mice and rats. That's why they go into heat so often and have so many babies at once. Two years is a long time for a small rodent!

Also, wikipedia tells me that "roan" colored guinea pigs are more likely to carry genes for eye disorders. :pseudo:
