I was watching a show today and they were talking about hidden allergies people may have to food that cause weight gain and bloating. One of the big things they talked about was dairy. I love me some cheese, but for a long time now I noticed that whenever I have cereal in the morning, my intestines will cramp and I'll be in pain for a few hours 'til it subsides. I thought it might've been the fact that I was eating so early in the morning, but it'll happen even at night.

I've never had any severe problems with dairy and highly doubt I have lactose intolerance, but I think I'm going to try cutting out some dairy and see what happens.

I think something like 75% of people are lactose intolerant as adults. For some people it's not a huge problem and they may not even notice, so I wouldn't be surprised if I were you. I'm lactose intolerant but I still eat dairy foods. I just have to make sure not to eat too much in one day, and remember which foods give me problems (yogurt for example almost never gives me issues, maybe it's the bacteria in it).

I wonder why the increase in lactose intolerance? (At least, it seems like an increase but it doesn't seem to be something that was heavily recorded long ago.) Think it has something to do with the increase in whatever they put in milk products?

I've noticed an increase in allergies to just food products in general--my mom is a preschool teacher, and when she started teaching the snacks that were served to the kids could be anything. Peanut butter, nuts, cupcakes, 'special' foods from story books like green eggs and ham. You know, stuff kids have fun eating.

Nowadays she can't serve ANY nut-related product, no eggs, no fish, no dairy. Kids can't even bring in cupcakes on their birthdays. Food allergies have definitely gotten much worse lately. There was even a little girl who was allergic to wheat, eggs, and gluten. She had to eat rice cakes for snack.

I do believe it has something to do with the chemicals used to treat and preserve the food.

Cori I think your example is more evident of changes in society and stuff than allergies.

Y'know like reforms based on how it may be unsafe to serve stuff like that for fear of allergic reactions and the legal accountability associated with a kid having a reaction at a school or day-care.

That might be true. It just seems like a lot more kids have actually been diagnosed with food allergies lately. Maybe it's because I'm just more aware of what my mom does at work now.

I found out I'm allergic to ant bites like last year. When I was younger I used to get bitten all the time, yet suddenly I turn red and break out in hives if I get bitten by the ants around my house.

I have a slight lactose intolerance with milk, if it even can be called that, where I sometimes have to go to the bathroom multiple times because it messes with my stomach. Cheese and yogurt never seem to give me problems but a simple bowl of cereal will screw me over.

I think I read an article on Cracked that mentioned that pasteurizing milk and treating it does make allergy symptoms worse. Depending on how far back you're talking, that might be a factor.

I do have to agree with Vax. I've had nut allergies since the beginning, and in elementary school my allergies were always taken into special consideration. Later on it became standard procedure for schools to start denying kids being able to bring in anything with nuts.

I remember the first time one of my schools decided that kids couldn't bring in homemade treats. Everything had to be from a store. I was so sad (I always brought in cupcakes for every holiday).

I'm pretty sure the creators made her 14 just to fuck with everybody
Not that she even remotely resembles a 14-year-old girl
