I almost think that this notion of "super red" and "super blue" states is a self-fulfilling prophecy of a kind. Everyone "knows" that dems/reps are going to win in that state, so barely any who would vote for the other guy go and vote for the guy, making the state "super red/blue" and everyone says "I knew it. Good thing I didn't go out and waste my time voting for the other guy"

"Lets get away from Universal Health care, marriage equality and decent welfare by going to a country that already has all of that."

Living in a red county is a pain in the booty sometimes

I wasn't gonna vote for the longest time because I was appealing to that fallacy, but then I remembered it as just that and went and voted at the last minute. The lady told me there was a chance my vote wasn't gonna count, but fuck it. Obama's already won and there's something seriously more wrong than "Romney becomes president" if the last minute votes get segregated enough to where he wins.

My thoughts exactly.

That might be true for some people, but I think there are many states that are slowly creeping towards being more moderate. In Texas, for example, I think some 40% voted for Obama? And we're pretty stereotypically red. Our population is getting a lot more diverse though (think of the rapidly growing Latino population) and a few of our biggest cities (Dallas and Austin) are often seen as "blue cities in a red state".

The majority is still there, but it doesn't have an iron grip like it might have used to.

That's why most of the "swing" states are worth more electoral votes than the auto red and blue ones because they can go either way depending on how the voting goes in each county. Hell my county's ballots were one of the first done in Florida and it was primarily red at 61% for Romney and 38% for Obama and the whole state was splattered in red yet it still managed to turn blue because of people's votes

I think the point D-vid was making was that you should just vote for whoever represents you best and not worry about if your vote will have been "useful" or not.

Bon appetit, I'm a feast for the eyes
The reason why I’m, in luxury designs
So chic, so ahead of time
Kunt queen, princess of the prize
Witness the baddest bitch alive
I’m reporting from the belly of the night
Gorgeous: plus the world is mine
A girl with a twirl and a rhyme
Diamonds and a pearl on the shine
Welcome to her house in the sky

daisies, a lot of good stuff happened this election, Obama was re-elected. Weed was legalized in two states, gay marriage in three.

Also these are p. great.

Mary Gonzalez is the Representative-elect for Texas and will be the first openly pansexual official in the United States.
Mazie Hirono is the Senator Elect from Hawaii and will be the first Asian-American woman in the Senate.
Tammy Duckworth is the Representative-elect for Illinois. She lost both her legs in the Iraq War and will be the first disabled female veteran elected to the House.
Tammy Baldwin is the Senator Elect from Winsconsin and the first openly gay person ever elected to the Senate.

Go America.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. I've also only been up for a few hours, I went to bed when they said Obama won.

I wasn't being sarcastic. This really is a great step forward.

Except for the bit about the comments, that was sarcasm. I'm not really going to go read them. They hurt too much.

Hopefully with legalization slowly coming through in the US, Europe will follow suite, or it will at least bring the discussion out of taboo.

Uh, yeah, the thing about the weed legalization? Not gonna fly. The federal government can technically overturn it and generally have.

Meanwhile in California, I'm disgusted with this state. Proposition 30 passed because the governor and unions, which have too much fucking power, ran a fear campaign. He pretty much said if we did not pass his tax increase he would strip more cheddar from education instead of, you know, anything else like maybe the four billion dollar bullet train to nowhere. So now our minimum state sales tax, which is already the highest in the country, is going from 7.25% to 7.5%. Thing is the cities add in their own tax, so where I live it's now 8.5% sales tax and some cities can reach 9.75%. Oh, and the income tax now? Well I'll just quote Ballotpedia.

Quote:
Creates four high-income tax brackets for taxpayers with taxable incomes exceeding $250,000, $300,000, $500,000 and $1,000,000. This increased tax will be in effect for 7 years.

Imposes a 10.3% tax rate on taxable income over $250,000 but less than $300,000--a percentage increase of 10.6% over current policy of 9.3%. The 10.3% income tax rate is currently only paid by taxpayers with over $1,000,000 in taxable income.

Imposes an 11.3% tax rate on taxable income over $300,000 but less than $500,000--a percentage increase of 21.5% over current policy of 9.3%.

Imposes a 12.3% tax rate on taxable income over $500,000 up to $1,000,000--a percentage increase of 32.26% over current policy of 9.3%.

Imposes a 13.3% tax rate on taxable income over $1,000,000--a percentage increase of 29.13% over current "millionaires tax" policy of 10.3%.

From what I'm seeing, the ones hit the hardest are the first and second tier, what I would call upper middle class. Not to mention the sales tax increase, which hurts absolutely everyone. My dollar just got weakened again.

If you believe the members of my facebook friends list who are stereotypically redneck (and admit it regularly), this is more a step towards another civil war (as in the phrase "civil war" was actually used) than forward. All they can talk about is stocking up on ammo and oiling their guns. I just hope they realize that no one's actually going to be losing anything before they fire the first preemptive shot.
