I read the comic before the film was even conceived. I didn't know about Guy Fawkes until I read the comic. But, according to a podcast a listen to run by a few English guys, there's tons of fireworks and bonfires and shit on Guy Fawkes day. Everyone I know personally heard about it through the film.
