Unfortunately Trygve I never did much shopping in New York. I can only really recommend places to eat, and most of them are focused around the Times Square area since I always got off at the Port Authority to get to work.

The Stardust Diner was one of my favorite places to eat. My friend took me here when she visited back in 2009, and we ended up going twice in one day. The waiters and waitresses there are all either on Broadway, or are hoping to be, and they always have someone (or more than one) singing.

Carnegie is one of those restaurants you "have" to go to simply because it's been visited by so many people. Shayla and I had to wait in line for a little when we went to eat. You better starve yourself beforehand, because their servings are really, really large.

Their "Wall of Fame" covers way more than what that picture shows, don't let it fool you. Also, that last picture is what I was physically incapable of consuming because oh god my stomach was going to explode. (Those leftovers are about 1/3rd of the sandwich I ate. I hope you like red meat!)
Those two places have really great food. Stardust is definitely more reasonable with their portions, though.
There was also this little pizzeria about two blocks down from the Port Authority called Racanelli's. It got a fair amount of traffic, but I loved going there to eat before my classes. The pizza there is delicious. Really thin, crispy crust with just the right amount of cheese and sauce. The guys who worked there always remembered me too, haha (probably because I always had a gigantic bag of art supplies).
If you're interested in some niche places, though, East Village is supposed to be a good area. That's around where I took classes, and there were a ton of small shops to visit.
