In regard to weapon choices, .22's are cheap, but have little power. .223's are quite a bit more, despite the name. .556 is the standard NATO round, so you may want that. I'd go with the AK-74, though. Sidearm should be at least a .45. Blades don't need to be reloaded.

For food you want non-perishables that don't need to be cooked, but also eat fruit (scurvy).

For shelter, there are many options, but weigh each option carefully.

For knowadge, buy the Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks.

I would grab a metal bat from my brother's room, empty my backpack then load it up with granola bars, fruit cups, beef jerky and bottles of water. I would then get into my car and head on down to Hempstead Highway. There, I. Would head west and try to get out of the city. There's a good amount of convenience stores and restaurants along the highway, so I could loot those. Also beforehand I may print out a google map of how to get to New Braunfels, Texas. That's where I'd stay until it gets safe again.
