Continue Penance until your jailer leaves, then flee.
You move to a different portion of the stone and attempt to placate the angered Tritoun by following its directions. As your hammer hits the stone to break up that hellish ringing, the Tritoun seems to be waiting for something, its axe still wedged into the stone. You watch it to the side as you labor, wondering what it's waiting for, and why THAT BEASTLY NOISE WILL NOT CEASE.
Then the Tritoun bends down, but the bulk of the stone obscures your view. The metallic roar returns: "THE WRATH OF OCTATEM RESONATES IN YOUR TRANSGRESSION." The Wrath of Octatem? Is that what they call this horrid ringing? And what transgression is it--
The Tritoun stands back upright, holding the severed end of the chain. You try to reason with it, to tell it that it was the one to cut the chain, but you don't seem to have the means to speak the way the Tritoun does.
"YOU DARE TO FLEE BINDINGS AND PENANCE?" It reaches for the axe that is stuck into the stone. "THE PUNISHMENT FOR ATTEMPTED ESCAPE IS EXECUTION."
You can see a couple more Tritouns in the distance starting to move this way.
Oh dear.

[[Other suggestions will be put to a new update tomorrow morning. I just wanted to address Chin's now, because I liked the idea, and felt like adding to the situation.]]

inventory
A surprisingly good thought comes to you in a moment of panic: What materials do you have at your disposal? Anything that can help you get out? A mental inventory reminds you, however, that aside from this body of compressed ash, all you have is the hammer chained to your chest, and a useless shackle around your ankle.

Strike the Tritoun's skull with your hammer Grab his axe, you will need it later

Hit it with the hammer, then take the axe.
That axe would certainly be a far more helpful weapon than what you have now, but daisies it all, there's no way you could carry both the hammer (which isn't exactly optional at this point), and the massive axe. And if the Tritoun itself is struggling to remove it from the stone, there's no way you would be able t--
This is not constructive.

RUN YOU FOOL
[[This is just a partial update. I was actually going to have a complete one this morning, but I was having some computer problems and lost the post just a little before it was completed. I will post the remainder of the update with the next set of actions by the end of the night.]]

[[Running outnumbered fighting or a hybrid option, so we'll go with that.]]
You gather up the chains that tether this hammer to your chest and swing it up over your shoulder. After all, it only weighs as much as your sins. Shouldn't slow you down too much, right? As you take your first step to run, it occurs to you that you don't remember having done this before. What if you aren't fast enough? What if you tire too quickly? But as your feet strike the sand, you what you DO remember is that there is no time to dwell on this. Not with one Tritoun next to you, retrieving its axe, and four more headed your way.
With your momentum built up after a few steps, you lean into a sprint, maneuvering around the shield attack of the nearest Tritoun, and bounding toward the eternally setting sun at a joyous speed. It would seem that what this body lacks in strength, it makes up for in agility as you dodge and escape more Tritouns, who are all roaring through the piercing ring of Octatem's Wrath.
So you keep running. Past more towers, ruins, Tritouns and penitents, toward the edge of the endless Wastes. Your footsteps do not cease, and to your surprise, you do not feel any sense of fatigue, even after the vast distance. Although with further thought, you suppose that isn't too surprising after all: One who has no breath to begin with doesn't need to stop and catch it, now, do they?
You have no idea if the Tritouns are still chasing you, and you don't dare turn around to look. But ahead, its silhouette washed out against the golden-red light, is some kind of structure. It could be your gateway to freedom, or it could house another creature sent to stop you. As you draw nearer, you realize that it is a bridge. A bridge that spans a bottomless canyon, the other side of which you cannot see. But it is an end to the Wastes of Eternal Stone.
You know where you have to go. The moment your feet leave the sand for the single carved stone that comprises the bridge, the hateful ringing cuts out. You finally slow your sprint to a walk and look over your shoulder--
A spear knicks your hip, breaking a small piece of compressed ash off onto the surface of the bridge. The Tritouns were still behind you after all, but they too are drawing to a stop, however, it seems like they don't intend to set foot on the bridge.
What will you do?
