I think a lot of the cartoons most of us grew up watching weren't very good. Like, I tried watching Dexter's Lab since it's on Netflix and I couldn't stand it, even though I loved it when I was a kid. Same goes for most of the stuff that was on CN and Nick back in the 90's. Rocko, Cow & Chicken, Ren & Stimpy, and the like were all fucking horrible and if they were made today instead of 15-20 years ago, everyone would hate them.
To be fair there were some gems (Batman: TAS, Animaniacs, PPG, etc.) but most 90's cartoons were awful and terrifying. The 80's were pretty crappy too but it was less disturbing stuff and more just mediocre and forgettable.
I don't really watch cartoons anymore, so while I'm hesitant to have much of an opinion on what's around now, from what I've seen they're overall better than what we had. Even the weird stuff doesn't seem to be on the same level of fucked up that I remember seeing in cartoons growing up.
I agree. There was hardly any continuity, and the audio seemed...boring I guess would work, not sure exactly how to describe it, but it always made me lose interest. Especially in really old cartoons like popeye, and I absolutely hate Betty Boop. I did like a few shows like Courage the Cowardly Dog, Samurai Jack, and Hey Arnold wasn't too bad, but for the most part, I don't like a lot of the cartoons I grew up watching.
