So, you have Fifth senses. Sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing. Well, the "touch sense"... is a lot more complex (includes crude and fine touch). But we are forgetting about equilibrioception (sense of balance), propioception (the sense that tell your brain where is every extremity), thermoception (well, temperature) and nociception (sense of pain). Oh, yes. Then we have 9 senses (although a lot of people nowadays think that touch is not strictly a sense).
You think that nociception is not that important to be called a sense? Well, frogs don't have it. If you stab someone, you will know it pains. If you stab a frog, the frog brain will say "Mmmm. There is loss of temperature in sector X, and a lot of signals are coming and going. I'm hurt so I'll should try to recover. Also, there is something huge near me, I should run". See? No whining. Frogs (for example) doesn't have pain receptors.
Oh, oh, oh! Balance. You need 3 things to mantain balance: Cerebellum, the vestibular system (inner ear) and vision! The cerebellum regulates a LOT of things that the brain cortex is going to do in the wrong way, and learns how to do them WELL, also regulates muscular tone and manages most part of propioception. The vision tells your brain where are you, and your surrondings, and the vestibular system with the movements of the lymph in the labyrinth of the inner ear.
Sooooooo... it's like a tripod, but you need at least TWO of them to mantain balance. And here comes the thing: If you start drinking (alcohol), the cerebellum will start to "shutdown" (that why you can't stand up right or miss at things, the brain cortex is doing the motor things without his corrector!). From there... you're in a dangerous road. You'll only have ears and eyes. If you close your eyes, you will drop to the floor.
Well, later I'll bring more interesting and useless things.
