While I don't agree with closing off borders, I do think immigration is causing some problems. But yeah, mete definitely isn't like hitler. He's not ranting about imaginary problems and calling for purges. He's pointing out actual problems and he has data to back it up

I've found a person who claims to be agnostic that says Christians who interpret the Bible in a different way are "cherry-picking". The best part? He got all his knowledge about Christianity from being raised by Mormon parents.

I doubt that particular viewpoint is all that hard to find.

I know, but it honestly drives me nuts. He doesn't even believe in the separate sects of Christianity, hence why I brought up his parents being Mormon. However, he evades this by saying that Mormons believe in everything the Bible says, word for word, but they're "brick-adding" by using the Book of Mormon as well.

Religious splits never made sense to me in the first place. Either the Word of God is irrefutable or its not, and yet no one can agree on what any of it means, making the whole thing an excersize in futility.

You'd love the southern United States, then. I can throw a rock from my apartment and bounce it off the roof of five different churches.

The way it works around here is this:

Go to church.
Disagree with pastor.
Shop around 500 other churches. Disagree with all of them on that one point.
Buy a shed from Home Depot.
Declare yourself pastor of your new shed.
You are now church.

Seriously. I recently moved into town, but I used to live 10-15 miles out and it was a running joke in my family to eagerly watch one of the houses we had to drive past develop their own church. THey started with a busted, garbage dump of a trailer. Then a shed appeared in the yard. bodaciously a shed. Like 10x10 feet. "HOUSE OF PRAYER" was painted on the side (we called it 'Shed of Prayer'). Then one of those big signs with the letters and blinking lights appeared by the road (one of these) that said

"HOUSE OF PRAYER
SERVICES SUN. MON. WED. FRI. SAT, 11 AM
PASTOR TOMMY BLAIR" (or some other local sounding name)

It was incredible. THe idea of shopping around for a church that you agree with is incredible. It really does make the whole idea pointless.

I think Jehova's Witnesses believe that only a chose few (tens of thousands iirc) are actually going to heaven. It's weird how some sects are convinced that everyone outside them are going to hell and following the wrong path.

The saying "The only difference between a religious person and an atheist is that the atheist doesn't believe in 1000 religions instead of 999." comes to mind.

That sort of thinking was a lot more common pre-Renaissance, before the Beeldenstorm or Iconoclastic Fury forced people to be more accepting of different beliefs lest they risk perpetual civil war.

It's an interesting philosophical issue though, if you are a truly religious person adhering to most classic religions, you believe that you are on the only path of salvation, and therefore you are morally obliged to try to convince others to join you, lest they risk their soul to damnation.

I was once told that I'd be doomed to eternal damnation because I didn't close the cap on a bottle of hand soap.

Said person never actually read the bible and would constantly shove it in people's faces, anyone, saying that he didn't read the bible but they needed to give it a good reading.
Like, he wasn't even trying to hide the hypocrisy.

I've been really wary about interacting with highly "religious" people ever since.
