Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that because some states haven't reported on their full population yet? So, for example, Obama's numbers reflect all of California's electoral votes but only 5% of its popular vote? ((I'm using the Huffington Post map, for reference))

Percentage of votes in a state doesn't matter. If you win the majority of votes, you get all of the electoral votes.

It is quite possible to win the Electoral votes, but lose the popular vote, it has happened several times before, and will again.

Yeah, that's kind of what I'm saying?
I'm just explaining the current disparity in the popular vote, because by the looks of it Obama definitely won both.
But since California hasn't reported their full population, they're not counting as much for the popular vote as they should, making it look like the popular/electoral votes are incongruent.

As of today (if Romney won the popular) it only happened twice ever.

Oh I see what you're saying now. Yeah it is close, and I'm sure it will close a bit more

OBAMA: 45,596,312 49.2%
ROMNEY: 45,783,691 49.4%

And my brother just complained about the birth certificate buisness...really? Wasn't this settled a long time ago?

Also, sorry about the Double post, I was on the way to delete it, but someone posted before I could.

EDIT: Four presidents took office without winning the popular vote. In other words, they did not receive a plurality in terms of the popular vote. They were elected, instead, by the electoral college or in the case of John Quincy Adams by the House of Representatives after a tie in the electoral votes. They were:
John Quincy Adams who lost by 44,804 votes to Andrew Jackson in 1824
Rutherford B. Hayes who lost by 264,292 votes to Samuel J. Tilden in 1876
Benjamin Harrison who lost by 95,713 votes to Grover Cleveland in 1888
George W. Bush who lost by 543,816 votes to Al Gore in the 2000 election.

Those won by electoral college, but not popular vote bolded.

Actually, it has happened four times so far, not counting tonight's. The elections of 1824, 1876, 1888, and 2000 all had electoral wins with popular losses.

Although to be fair the 1824 election was all sorts of fucked up.

Edit: Damnit Chekt I was here first.

I love living in Texas

I asked why Romney supporters felt that he was the better choice over Obama and the first answer I get is a list of Obama's mistakes and flaws. Not what Romney did to deserve the presidency over Obama, but why Obama sucks and shouldn't have been elected.

Then I challenge his views neutrally and he basically explodes like I insulted his mom or something.

I just.. love living in Texas.

I think Lotharu is as well.

I agree with conservatives in some places, but their complacency with Education and the fact that they're still hung up on bullshit like abortion and gay marriage annoys the fuck out of me.

I'm fine with conservatism, as long as it's not preventing, you know, the basic rights of human beings.
or like trying to make companies, already the most powerful things ever, even more powerful

or wanting more power for the states even though we basically tried that when america started and it was fucking stupid and didn't work

or wanting to lower taxes even though we're in a period where the government needs cheddar desperately but also needs to continue the programs that support the country

actually i don't think i'm all that fine with conservatism at all

I think it's more that the majority of the forum is more moderate due to social issues rather than purely financial ones, so a lot of the forum is siding with Obama in this case, because they just don't like Romney. It's kind of like, if we stick with Obama, at least we know what should happen. We have no idea what will go down if Romney is elected, because he keeps changing his mind. You mentioned a while back that you are very steadfast in what you believe and feel for political and faith-related things. Romney doesn't have that. He kind of keeps switching around on the first one, while avoiding talking about the second.

Plus, most people you'll run into on the internet (not facebook) will tend to be leaning more toward liberal, just because of the social atmosphere of the internet. It's not really just this forum in particular.

Popular vote is closing fast.

OBAMA 49,478,518 49.3%
ROMNEY 49,467,161 49.3%

EDIT:
OBAMA 49,627,121 49.3%
ROMNEY 49,601,098 49.2%

NVM, he pulled ahead. (for now)
