I don't know if it was the 10 update specifically, I just noticed that my laptop was incredibly slow sometime after I got a notification that there was a Windows update. Through the task manager, I saw one of the "svchost" processes was the culprit, which was basically a bundle of basic background services that run automatically, including Windows Update. I had told the updater long ago to stop installing without my permission, but apparently that didn't keep the updater service itself from running. For whatever reason, this particular update was eating half of my free RAM just sitting there, so I used the admin tools to shut the updater itself off completely.

And for anyone who thinks the updates are necessary for security or whatever, I don't intend for this laptop to last much longer in any case.

Riku, if you haven't diagnosed the problem yet, check the task manager (I don't have 8 but I'm assuming some basic stuff is the same?) and look for the processes from all users. I couldn't find the guilty svchost processe until I specifically checked that.

I've been checking the task manager, andit's saying that my disk usage is at 100% (regular Memory category is apparently fine, hovering between 30-40% usage), but what shows in the task manager doesn't add up to 100% of extra disk space. The numbers generally only add up to 60% at most. I keep thinking I've found a fix in altering skype's read/write settings, and it seems like IM services, whether it be skype or just the goddamned facebook messenger are at least coinciding with the spikes in usage, if not the direct cause.

Checking for some kind of malware, though, just in case, although I don't know where I would have picked something up. None of the sites I go to are any kind of sketchy, and I'm usually pretty careful to avoid clicking on links.

Computer help!? Yay!

My laptop keyboard doesn't work right. It randomly goes from hamperring my WPM (40 on the teaching service at school) to being normal to not registering a single keystroke. The normal happens randomly when starting up, but after using the computer for a bit it just stops working every. It also slows by plugging it to charge or touching the keypad. I have to restart to get it functional.

Unsure if hardware or software. But it isn't the "keystroke" setting (the one that adjusts typing speed and such)

Drivers are the little programs that you don't have to click on/execute that basically install things to your computer, like a mouse, keyboard, microphone, etc.
Exercise your Google-Fu from here on out. No one has an excuse to not know simple facts/knowledge for more than about two minutes, these days.

I can't, I'm too old to drive.

Also, something that mildly annoys me is my username. It's an old one that my friends gave me that I don't really use anymore, but I can't think of a decent new one to ask to replace it with. I've always been bad at coming up with usernames. Like when I sign up for a new game with my friends or something, they'll all pick serious names and then I'll choose something like XxYoloSwag420xX. I remember once they all wanted to sign up for a small LoL tourney and needed a team name and one of them got mad at me because all of my suggestions were intentionally stupid. I think one of my suggestions was Team BeaverStank, which I still think is a great team name. I just can't will myself to come up with some serious alias like "Quintonix" or some shit like that that they use.

So I checked and apparently my voter status is "Suspense" (Texas pls, that doesn't even grammar). The website said I'm allowed to vote but they might prompt me to update my address... the day I go to vote... I think. The wording was rather confusing.

I also can't update said address without calling the county registrar which I ain't got time to do during the week, so I guess my plan for now is to just assume I'm fine and hope there's no bureaucratic problems later.

Yo if the gubmint could get with the times and let us register online already, that'd be greeeeat.

:eng101: Actually (see definitions 1 and 4).

It's weird that you guys have to be proactive in order to vote. Here in Canada you're automatically put on the list when you turn 18 and that's it. You just have to tell someone when you move into another circumscription as far as I know.

If I had to guess, I'd assume it's an immigration thing.

Well that's neato.

But yeah registering to vote is a mild pain in the booty. Pretty sure it's a huge reason why young people hardly ever vote in the US, because it is confusing and inconvenient to actually do it. It isn't DIFFICULT, but if you've never done it before, many folks can't be assed to bother with it.
