What about paychecks for the workers? I've always been under the assumption that "nonprofit" meant is was volunteer funded and run.

Oh well OK then. So then what exactly is the difference between "profit" and "nonprofit"? I mean where is the profit that profit companies see that nonprofits don't?

Non-profit companies are more about providing a service than making cheddar. Like PBS.

That's......well to be honest that's sorta a vague answer, I'm thinking more along the lines of the physical differences.

Like how is it that we can structure a research firm to be nonprofit, but not lose any efficiency like is stereotypically the difference.

Do you? Do you know the amount of cheddar required to fund modern-day research? Where is that supposed to come from? No company is going to invest in a non-profit on that scale. The government? In this economy?

Sorry, that was meant to be a modest question. I'm saying it's vague because, up until now, I thought the only difference between a profit, and nonprofit was that nonprofit organizations were strictly run by volunteers. Since that's gone I have no idea what distinguishes them physically.

Like there are two different shoe donation groups, Toms shoes, and some other shoe company. Toms is for profit because they manufacture the shoes, and sell them where the donation comes from the fact that every pair sold is a pair donated overseas. The nonprofit one collected old shoes and just shipped them overseas. For Toms, the manufacturers got paid a regular paycheck, whereas the other company was volunteer run. That's where it's coming from.

I don't think it necessarily loses any efficiency. When you're do complex stuff like :science:, waving cheddar in front of your face like a carrot won't make you do your job better or faster.

government grants, donations, bequeathals, maybe a portion of tax payer cheddar. It's improbable yes and it won't happen anytime soon, but I think it would be for the better.

I can see where you're coming from, although I think you're being idealist. But are you seriously going to forbid companies from having an R&D department? What effect do you think that will have on the economy?

They can exist as long as copyright laws are short enough that they can profit reasonably well from it, but not, like, mickey mouse long.

I remember this issue being a topic in my anthropology class (it was a bit specified, but had the basic "science vs. business" model) where you had to pick which side should be more important. I also remember mine being "neither" since the two are almost completely different when it comes to how shit's run, but with the stipulation that the two be collaborative, and not competitive. Basically, science isn't exploited for profit, and business isn't used for frugality.

So basically Lambeth you want to change copyright law, which is a whole other kettle of fish.

The unfortunate thing is, not only does this seem plausible for Romney to do (otherwise, sane people wouldn't be believing it), but also, people are so divided over "Romney vs. Obama" that they'd be willing to believe this at face value.

Could you elaborate a little, Kamak? I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say.
