It would probably move through a zombie as fast as it would a tree of equal size.
The only way I would see it go slower through flesh is because flesh isn't rigid like wood and thus not have as much traction needed to it cut at a normal rate.
Either way it's still too slow when your enemy doesn't care that it's being cut in half.

I'd probably jump to my feet as soon as the news came on, shout something heroic, grab my baseball bat and get taken out in the hallway as soon as I rounded a corner. I am not a very good zombie slayer.

I would leave town ASAP with whatever suplies i could gather quickly. Be safe, get away from the large groups of zombies. if this wouldn't work, crap I'm dead.
