I smoke Marijuana for recreational use. Plenty of people disagree with that but, oh well.

I didn't think the Last of Us was that great.

The story was predictable. The characters were good, but not great. Gameplay seemed great (I watched an LP, didn't play myself), but not anything revolutionary.

It was a still a good game, to be sure. I just don't understand why everyone was blown away by it.

Well the trailers looked amazing and built it up a lot, so a lot of that hype stayed with it after release even though it wasn't anything amazing.

This is somewhat relevant (and could be discussed in the GGG thread), but it really irks me how nowadays the word 'cinematic' gets thrown around like being a movie is a good thing for a game to be. I really like a good story, but only when it's presented in a way that makes use of the qualities that games have over other mediums, such as interactivity. Let the game tells its story over a long period of time, through player-driven character interactions, the world, and other unique features that introduce variability to make the experience different each time. Don't try to do it like movies do it because at that point you'll be watching hours upon hours of cutscenes and going through the same on-rails scenarios that the devs have put there to make sure you get the 'correct' experience.

I'm not necessarily saying this all applies to TLoU - I haven't played it and I've barely seen any footage of it so I'm going to reserve judgment but I know that the words 'cinematic' and 'narrative' got thrown around in reviews a lot and some jackasses even went ahead and called it a 'mature' game and other bullshit, like video games have to be less like video games to prove something.

I definitely agree with your sentiment on the focus on "cinematic experiences" in the gaming industry.

On TLoU, it is clearly designed to create one singular experience and this it does pretty well. One way to put it is that the game is "masterfully crafted", all the important details are handled with care and precision. In that sense it's not hard to see why the game is called cinematic, and I definitely feel like it excels at delivering this quality (which is not what every one looks for in a game though). One important distinction to make though is that it sacrifices little in the way of gameplay to achieve this experience. There is a game here, with functional mechanics that create actual survival horror. Gameplay situations can be overcome through means the player himself is supposed to come up with, and these are more unique than your typical "gun A, gun B or generic psychic power C". Still, this gameplay is designed with the intention to create a feel (the oppresive atmosphere of survival horror) rather than the gameplay being the experience itself.

So it doesn't fall into the typical pitfalls of "cinematic" games, where they remove diversity and complexity from the game to ensure that every player has the same experience. However I do feel it still belongs to that subset of games, but it's one of the (in my experience) rare cases of being done right.

So is liking Markiplier the popular or unpopular opinion?

Because I like him. He seems like a pretty swell guy and his videos make me laugh.

Gundam Seed Destiny is fucking horrible and it bugs me to no end the fact that it tops best of lists all the time.
The show doesn't even try to make sense, the characters are awful, and the model kits are shit. Okawara's designs look neat on paper but suffer once put in motion.
...
That's about it.

I don't think Let it Go is a particularly great song. Like it's technically competent and I guess the message is fine but It really just sounds like Standard Disney Movie Song and all. It seems really generic.

I'm so tired of seeing jokes and spoofs of it everywhere.

Find a new joke, people, please.
