for that past week or so my computer has been SUPER struggling to load pages in firefox. not like it just takes a long time to load pages, i mean firefox will freeze and my computer will start up like a jet engine for several seconds before calming down and the page loads. opening new tabs seems to be a major culprit. i'm not really finding any help online though i might just not be seeing it or thinking it's what i want. any ideas? i just ran a boot scan with my antivirus and while it did find a couple trojans they didn't seem to be the problem as its still doing it. also not other program i run does this so it's specifically firefox.

and no i'm not interested in switching to chrome.

[Assuming you're using Windows 7]
Go to C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData (which is hidden) and then find Firefox's folder (probably in Local but potentially in Roaming, or both). Rename the folder(s) and then launch Firefox. It should recreate it's own folders under their original names (as if you just installed it). If the problem is still there, it means your setup is not to blame. If so, delete the new folders and revert the original ones to their old names.
What extensions and plugins do you use?

done. time to wait and see if it helped. it doesn't do it all the time but just enough for me to be a little concerned.

currently the only plugin i'm using is xkit. i feel no real need for more.

This is a build I'm currently looking at
PC part picker list (prices not really reliable since I'm not in the UK, but they're close enough to make the big decisions. I'm probably going to switch some stuff around based on local deals.

CPU
Intel Core i5-4440 3.1GHz Quad-Core
CPU Cooler
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing
Motherboard
MSI Z87-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150
Memory
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
Storage
Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB 2.5" SSD
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM
Video Card
MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB
Case
Fractal Design Define R4 w/Window (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower
Power Supply
Corsair 600W ATX12V

Purpose is gaming obviously. I know the PSU is overkill but thought I'd leave myself the option for SLI and other stuff since it was only 20 bucks or something more than weaker PSUs. I'm very open to case suggestions since I pretty much just picked one, nothing too expensive though.

Any thoughts/suggestions/glaring flaws?

Edit: just realized, with the locked cpu I probably shouldn't bother with the non-stock cooling, should I?

Going through some old CD ROMS my grandma had, and she had both Age of Empires 2 and Myst.

Myst is probably too old to get to work normally, but AoE2 has an ESRB rating on it, so I can probably salvage that and figure it out on my own.

Anyone know what I'd need to do to get Myst running on my computer? (For the record, the laptop I have is fairly old, about 7-8 years, and runs Windows XP.) (Yes, I know that my family is living in the past.)

I might give this a closer look later but a cheap custom cooler is a good investment even if you won't be overclocking. I have that same cooler and it was basically silent at stock speeds. The reduced heat also helps with keeping the rest of the case cool, especially the GPU.

Check out the GOG forums, but with such an old system, I doubt you'll encounter problems. Backwards compatibility usually only becomes a problem with Vista/7.

I came up with a cheaper build that I'll probably end up going with instead. I realised I probably won't get around to SLI any way so I switched to H87 and a cheaper PSU, as well as getting a cheaper case. But I'll definitely take into account what you said about the CPU cooler Mete, think I'll see how cheap I can find one. Or maybe I'll go with stock first and see how that goes.
Not gonna bother copy-pasting the parts again.

Ah, okay. I haven't actually tried it yet, I just assumed an old game like that would just fail.

Thanks for the info!

I've had a problem like that trying to play Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 on windows 7, but I heard you can run a virtual machine of an older OS and it fixes it.

Do they make silent hard drives? Usually, I can't even hear my fans over the racket me hard drive makes.

Yes, it's called an SSD.

On a more serious note (although if you have cheddar to burn, SSD is obv the way to go), it seems like your best bet would be to encase the HDD in a dampening enclosure. Other than that, apparently Western Digital Green's are very quiet.

I have an old Visioneer Onetouch 8100 scanner and Windows 7 64-bit which are not compatible with each other. The only workaround I've seen, installing drivers for a Onetouch 9420 instead, works only as far as getting Windows to acknowledge that the device is plugged in. Obviously, I need to get my hands on a 32-bit version of Windows.

If I were to do this, would it be easier to just install a new partition with Windows 7 32-bit, or would I be able to run a virtual instance of Windows XP 32-bit? (the latest OS to 'officially' work with the scanner, though I've used it fine on 7 32-bit before) Can virtual machines access USB devices and run drivers for them? Specifically the 'Windows XP Mode' that Microsoft offers would be ideal, but I'm open to alternatives.

hello az

i may or may not be thinking of buying a new tower case in the near future (long story short, my current stock case has no case fans and nowhere to really add any either and it overheads more than it should,) and I'm having some trouble finding any I really like? So post yer favourite cases I guess + a link to the page c: or if you just want to help me look, i have a full tower and I like black/red and black/yellow and maybe white because it's different, and i'm not looking to spend too much over $150 (though feel free to post over that if it's just SUPER COOL.)

Available in different colours and newer versions that have USB 3.0 and shit (but fewer colours).

The case I'm personally going with since I'm on a budget: Corsair 200r.

In my humble opinion, go with something that looks fairly plain and is easy to work with inside. It's very easy to want a new case for your next build if the old one has a horrible layout or bad internal design. Nowadays I just want a big server rack to have all my computer stuff in as it's much easier to work with.
