Zink continued to walk away. There appeared to be some commotion behind him, but the didn't care. He didn't care one bit about those skeleton discriminating jerks.
"I'm glad I have you, Jellyfisherson" Zink said to Jellyfisherson, "You are a good friend! I especially like the way you probably don't have any secret ulterior motives that are completely evil or anything!"
A bit later, Jellyfisherson began to twitch, as if it detected something. Suddenly, it began to glow. "What the hell?" Zink yelled, as he was engulfed in the light.
All was dark for a moment. "Where.... Where am I"? Zink said. At least, he tried to say that. However, it was darkness for only a moment before all was engulfed by light again. As it did, Zink experienced a sensation that felt similar to being pushed off a cliff, run over a by truck, crushed by a giant piston, getting hit by a nuclear bomb, being swept up and tossed by a tornado, and then run over again.
It was a very unpleasant, to say the least.
Zink was then slammed to the ground. He got up and looked around. He was in some sort of strange town, the likes of which he had never even seen before. The entire sky seemed to be filled with smoke. Snow, stained black from the ashes, fell around him. Buildings surrounded him as far as the eye can see (which wasn't very far, due to the smoke), each one contributing to the clouds of smog that shadowed the city.
"Where.... Where am I"? Zink said to himself, successfully this time. He turned around to find a very shocked child looking at him.
"I... I'm sorry I ran away!" the child, who appeared to be around 8 or 9, stammered, "I'll be good, I swear! Please don't hurt me!"
"What? Oh, no, I'm not going to hurt you!" Zink said. He was kind of used to this sort of thing. Children tended to act this way around him. "I'm not a boogeyman or anything. I'm just skeleton. A normal skeleton. Not sure why or how I am skeleton, I just... am."
"...So, you haven't come from the depths of hell?"
"No, of course I'm not. Well, I might have. I'm not really sure. Although, if that was why I was here, I probably would have known beforehand. I mean, I doubt hell is the most organized place in the world, but I think they would at least have the decency to tell me before they sent me to terrorize children."
"Hey, is that a PANK jellyfish!?" the child said, excitedly, displaying the kind of short attention span that only a child has.
"Well, it's more of a reddish color, really, but I guess its close enough. I call it Jellyfisherson. I think it's what brought me here... somehow... What is this place, anyway?"
"Oh, this is the alleyway behind the factory I worked at before I decided to run away this morning."
"No, I mean, this whole place. As in, the town."
"Oh. This is the City of Ashes, of course! What else would it be?"
"Huh. That's a very accurate name, I guess. Almost disgustingly so."
Suddenly, Jellyfisherson began to glow again. It hovered slightly, and then began to float in the air. It flew a bit towards a strange glow in the distance, and then stopped, as if waiting for someone to follow.
"Wow! I didn't know jellyfishes could do that!"
"Neither could I, actually. I think... I think it wants me to follow it. For some reason." Zink thought for moment, "...Do you have any idea what that glow is?"
"Yes, of course I do! That's the clock tower! It actually didn't glow until a little while ago. Maybe it was broken that whole time."
"...I... sort of get the impression that I'm supposed to... go there... and... find a... a... lock... no, not a lock... a key, of some sort. Yes, it wants me to find a key. That I am sure of. It... also wants me to protect the key... to make sure that no others can take it... no matter what..."
"Weird" was all the child could think to say.
"...I guess I should head over that way then. It just... it just seems to be what I am supposed to do. Thanks for your help."
The skeleton then started walking in the direction of the glow.
"Wait!" the child called out, running after him, "I want to come with you!"
"What? Uh, I don't think that is such a good idea..."
"No, please, let me come with you! They will probably start looking for me soon, and I'd probably have a better chance of running away if I'm with a scary skeleton!"
Zink sighed. "Fine... fine... You can follow me, I guess. It's probably better than you wandering the streets alone. But only until your parents show up."
"Okay." the child said, figuring that it was probably best not to mention that he didn't have any parents.
They started to walk towards the tower.
"By the way, Mr. Skeleton, can I ask you something?
"What?"
"What is it like outside the city? You know, where you come from?"
Zink thought for a moment. "It's... mediocre. At best."
They continued walking again. Zink wondered about all sorts of things. He wondered why Jellyfisherson seemed to be magic, why it had taken him here, and why it had to be him that found and protected that key.
The child, meanwhile, just tried to figure out what "mediocre" meant.
(Oh, wow, this is really long. And cliche'. And terrible. I'M SORRY GUYS I AM NOT A GOOD WRITER I GUESS.
Also, I really regret naming my character Zink since he really isn't based off of me at all.)
