I had the same problem not too long ago. If the virus let's you open .EXE files then just download Hitman 3.5, it works like a charm and the scan is very fast too. It's free for a month but then you have to pay $20 for it.

When it's first done scanning it'll ask for a registration number but right underneath it is the button to activate the free license, it was sort of hard to spot for me at first.

Easy then. Restart the computer after you have saved everything you want to keep. Then a window will pop up saying things like F1 Boot Menu and things like that. Hold down F10. That will take you to the Recovery Partition where you can reformat back to factory-default XP.

Clean slate.

I'd recommend backing up the majority of your drivers as well, as clean slate is as literal as it gets.
More specifically your internet drivers.

You may have the google redirect virus.
I have taken to the habit of just copy/pasting the link I get from google into the address bar, clicking open in new tab, or hoping that I get to the page I want. Only because the virus is a bitch to get rid of.

I had this virus for the longest time. what a pain in the booty. but it went away and soon got replaced by multiple fake anti-virus viruses.
soon explorer.exe (aka the taskbar and the icons on the desktop) wouldn't even open and we had to open programs by task manager.
