A short backstory about the state of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania after the Great War:

Quote:
Although Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was not hit directly by atomic bombs during the Great War, the water from the nearby Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers soon became highly irradiated. The confluence of these three rivers yielded disastrous results and changed the area's inhabitants in mysterious ways over the following decades.

The area that your adventure takes place in is called The Center. It takes place around the Reading, Lebanon and Hershey areas and may expand as time goes by.

Image

Although this region of Pennsylvania was certainly left in better shape than other parts of the country, and one can even find green areas, it still harbors post-war dangers, and these dangers only get worse once you go west.

You lived a fairly normal childhood, no more treacherous than other children in your village, and grew up with both your parents and older siblings. However, now that you have turned 16, you must join the adults in protecting and caring for the village and its people.

You are a girl. Now I'm letting you decide what her race should be, and her name, let's just keep this semi-serious and it should be fine.

((Note: I'll be taking classes from now until August 6th and then I will be away from the computer for a week, so expect updates to be a little slow until mid-august. I'll try my hardest to keep things on track though.))

I like how most of us ignored that completely.

I said semi-serious. I would prefer that this stay at least somewhat related to the darker source material, but since this is a text-adventure and I deliberately started this off in a bit of a lighter scene, I'm expecting that there be silliness.

By the way, this is going to be a drawn adventure, and I'll probably use scanned in drawings as well as digital.

I have no idea why, but when I first read the first post I instantly thought of the name "Maya".
So your name is Maya.

You're in your bedroom, sleeping. This particular room was your mother's long ago when she was your age and used to be yours and your sister's, but now that she's grown up and taking care of her family, you are the only resident of the bedroom. The first noise you hear that morning is a woman's voice, impatient.

"Maya, wake up! This is the fourth time I've told you to get up today," as you slowly come to awareness, you realize it is your mother. A few minutes of silence later, she opens the door, walks to your bed, and pulls you out of your bed, promptly snapping you back to reality. As you scramble to catch yourself before you hit the ground, you look up at your mother. She doesn't seem so much angry as excited.

"Did you forget what day it is Maya? I swear, you were always so energetic for special days, you know, but now I just think you're content to just sleep the day away!" You stand up and straighten out your nightgown.

However, you're still a little confused by what your mother said. What's so special about today? You rub the sleep out of your eyes and turn to look at the handmade 2112 calendar posted on the wall next to your bed. November 4th is highlighted, with large text reading MAYA'S B-DAY

Oh, that's right! How could you forget! It's your 16th birthday, the day where you start taking an active role in your village. It's not as flamboyant or exciting as a quincinera, but you have been eager to find out what they will assign you, since it depends on how you did as you grew up.

"Now get dressed and ready, Maya. I need you outside in 10 minutes." Your mother leaves and shuts the door behind her, leaving you to plan on how to prepare for your birthday.

NAO LYK OMG WUT DO I WERE

I search the room for some rat stew because dang I'm hungry, secretly hoping it didn't attract any huge cockroaches like that time Uncle lost his left leg.

You search the room for rat stew, which is strange because not only did your parents practically force you to clean your room last week but you're entirely certian you've never eaten rat stew. Nor have you heard of it. How did an idea like that pop into your head?

Poor Uncle, the radroaches might have taken away his leg but they didn't take away his dignity. It was the radscorpion that took that.
You're still hungry though. Perhaps if you get ready to go to your ceremony/celebration thing, there will be food there.

Ignoring your hunger for a second, you leave your room and search the hall for an occupied room. You knock on the door of room 206, home of the (fraternal) twins Annie and Scott Donnell, who also happen to be your friends.

Annie, a redheaded girl a bit younger than you, opens the door.
"Maya? What are you doing? Why are you in your pajamas--"

"Annie, what's the history of Cinco de Mayo?" You interrupt her, shouting.

"What? Well, uh..." Annie pauses for a second, looks down, and looking back at you, she says "Cinco de Mayo celebrates--"

You slap your forehead with your palm, obviously not understanding your joke. Scott would have got it.
"Uh, okay, see you later, I guess," Annie mumbles as you walk back to your room.

Back to your room, in your closet, you have two dresses, one for colder weather and one for warmer weather (your parents always stressed the importance of looking presentable even during an apocalypse), a denim vest and assorted long sleeve shirts. And some pants. But you never really were that concerned with what types of pants were what, that was your sister's domain.
