Yeah. It's kind of unnerving how little coverage there is for this, too. You'd never hear a peep about it unless you looked for it or happened to linger on google long enough to read the little info line at the bottom of the page.

Well I did post articles from big sites like BBC and the New York Times. The NYT article was made back in May though and I think people were still exhausted from fighting against SOPA and PIPA.

The issue I have with it and the reason why I think it's a big deal is that the ITU is an organization that's part of the UN, which has a pretty big HQ building in New York. They decided that the conference needed to take place in some way-off place like Dubai, when I'm pretty sure that said UN building could accommodate all of the delegates who would take part int he conference. That in itself is both odd and unnerving.

Good news is that a bunch of guys from Google are at the conference right now as part of the US group.

Well, SOPA isn't the first of that kind of law that they've tried to force on us. I still have an article from 2005 talking about another similar law. They'll never stop trying.

The ITU tried to do some stupid sneaky stuff and showed their true colors.

This kind of shit is unacceptable. They did some kind of non-serious vote to get "a feel of the room" but tried to turn said vote into the actual resolution. They failed at what they were trying to do, but it's still a massive dick move and proves that the ITU was just BSing from the start.

The ITU is a UN organization, so they're less big media and more big government.

It just pathetic that the ITU tried to play down the whole "regulating the Internet" thing in the days leading up to the conference, then at the actual conference they shit the proverbial bed.

Techdirt also ran an article showing who actually signed the treaty, and who didn't. Really shows the divide.

Another article that discusses the ridiculousness of the whole affair.

I enjoy how you take an interest in this.

Makes me a little happier to know that some people arent taking stupid pills yet.

Theres soooo many ways big folks could persecute people for sharing information about movies and merchandise on the Internet, and its always good to see that this is not happening, because someone simply wants to shore in their profits a bit more 8===D

Another article, this time from Forbes. It discusses the failings of the ITU and WCIT and what's next, the future of the Internet and all that.

From what I just read (in Dutch) it basically went down like Western countries wanting no new added articles that could lead to censorship, other countries adding those anyway and the opposing countries collectively saying: "Fine, if you're going to be like that we'll just not sign anything."
