The time: PROHIBITION ERA

You are a citizen of Big City, America. You moved here a while back from your home a little farther south. You came to Big City with hopes of making a name for yourself. However, your priorities have changed a little since then.
Life in Big City is not at easy as you thought. Violence is everywhere, spurred on by the illegal alcohol in the streets and the gangs that secretly run Big City. Honest work is hard to come by, and most succumb to the temptation of operating illegal gambling rackets or rum-running. But you're not that kind of person. Or are you?
Currently, you find yourself almost completely broke, living in a fifth-story apartment that you pay for by doing odd jobs for the building's landlord. You really need to find a find a real job, or else you'll be stuck in this hole forever.
But first, you need to make note of a few things.

You are a man, and your name is Jack Marcelo.
You kind of wish you had some bad-booty nickname, but you really haven't done anything that would merit one.
Anyway, your current location is your APARTMENT. It is pretty small, with three rooms: A main room (Which includes a small kitchen area), a bedroom, and a bathroom. Right now, you are sitting in a pretty comfy chair in your main room, looking out the window and listening to a jazz record on your second-hand gramophone.
In terms of gear, you are wearing a white shirt, suspenders, brown pants, shoes, and socks. You also have your wallet, and a small, snub-nose revolver you carry for protection. But you really can't imagine why any of that would be relevant.
However, your mind drifts back to your wallet. It is very close to empty. You need a way to fill it. You think you need a job of some sort.
Here in Big City, you can be pretty much anything you want to be. Of course, you don't even need to get a job right this second. You just feel the need to go out and do something.

So, what do you do?

Go find a fancy club and party with some dames.

Buy a one dollar police novel from the corner store.

I would think you wouldn't want to dwindle away your cheddar.

Go do an "odd job" for your landlord

And by that I mean his diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick

This is why we can't have nice things.
