Doubtful, but arson no matter how devastating to human lives is still arson. I'm not saying I have sympathy for the guy responsible but he is entitled to a fair trial regardless.

Arson is possibly the most difficult crime to prosecute.

Imagine if you caught a guy selling drugs, but then you had to prove that he wasn't selling the drugs on accident.

Anyways, it was very hot and dry in Australia leading up to the fires. One fire could have spread very easily. The likelihood of it spreading across half of the continent, I do not know. The likelihood of multiple fires being started at the same time by natural AND man-made causes, I also do not know. Believe what you want, it's the guys in suits who make the decisions.
