Wasn't his assassinator on his way to buy a sandwich or something when they ran into eachother?
Oh yeah, and the group planning his assassination -- the Black Hand, I think? Weren't they the bad guys from Jackie Chan Adventures? I bet he wouldn't have died if he knew karate.
The way I understand it (check Wikipedia yourselves, lazybones), there were multiple members of the Black Hand stationed throughout the parade route Ferdinand's car was moving through. The first one was only armed with a grenade, so he pulled the pin, threw it, then somebody picked it up and threw it away from the car. There was something about a failed suicide on behalf of the first assassin, and something about jumping into a ditch just off the road, but I forget the specifics.
Anyways, Ferdinand's party now knows someone is after them. The driver quits his leisurely speed and puts the pedal to the metal down the streets of a foreign city. In the general panic, he makes a wrong turn. A goddamn wrong turn.
Now, then. The leader of this group of assassins has given up, hearing about turbulance up the road. So yes, he goes to get the famous sandwich. While he's in the deli, which is off the parade route, he hears the car coming by outside. He steps out in time to see Franz and his wife, like a gift from some higher deity. So he just steps out into the street, and fires.
I challenge you to find a more comedic political assassination which started a major war than this.
I wonder if he ever got to eat that sandwich...
